The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that all National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members will now receive N77,000 every month starting from March 2025.
The new amount is a big increase from the N33,000 that corps members were getting before.
This information was confirmed by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, through a press statement shared by Caroline Embu, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations.
Why the NYSC Allowance Was Increased
The new allowance follows the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act, which increased the national minimum wage to N70,000. In September 2024, the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission approved the new N77,000 allowance for NYSC members.
Although the announcement was made in 2024, corps members continued to receive N33,000 due to delays. Now, the government says payment of the full amount, including back pay (arrears), will begin in March 2025.
FG Promises to Pay All Arrears
The Youth Development Minister, Ayodele Olawande, spoke on a TV interview and said the government is ready to pay all the arrears. He explained that both current and past corps members who served during the delay will get paid.
Minister Olawande admitted there were challenges. “It’s a process. We had to create a budget line for the new amount,” he said. “Now the funding is ready, and we’ve completed all the steps. It will not happen overnight, but it is coming.”
Corps Members React with Hope and Gratitude
At a NYSC event in Garki Zone, a corps member, Zaka Deborah Alheri, thanked the NYSC leaders for caring about the welfare of youth. She said the raise in allowance gives hope to many young Nigerians.
General Nafiu also encouraged corps members to stay calm and focused on their service. He said the NYSC will make sure all payments are done correctly.
