A Brief History of Ohio University
The journey of Ohio University dates back to 1786 when eleven men gathered at Boston’s Bunch of Grapes Tavern with a vision to develop the region known as Ohio Country.
Led by Rufus Putnam and Manasseh Cutler, the Ohio Company petitioned Congress for the proposed settlement.
The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 played a crucial role, emphasizing the importance of education in the newly settled territory.
In 1803, Ohio became a state, and on February 18, 1804, the Ohio General Assembly established “The Ohio University.”
The university’s humble beginnings included just three students, one professor named Jacob Lindley, and a single building in 1808.
Notably, Thomas Ewing, one of the first two university graduates, went on to become a prominent U.S. senator, serving in various presidential cabinets.
Ohio University has a history of breaking barriers. John Newton Templeton became the first black graduate in the university’s history, marking a significant achievement in 1828.
In 1873, Margaret Boyd made history as the first female graduate, earning a B.A. degree.
Additionally, Saki Taro Murayama of Japan became the first international graduate in 1895, further reflecting the university’s commitment to diversity and education.
As we continue to grow and evolve, Ohio University remains dedicated to providing educational opportunities and scholarships to students from all walks of life.
